  • Course Overview

    This specialized course is designed to provide persons with the knowledge and skills necessary to deliver systematic and explicit reading instruction to children between the ages of 3-6 years. It would include: special needs children, typically developing children and multilingual persons. Participants will explore evidence-based strategies, proven instructional methods, and reliable resources to support reading development in diverse learners. The course will address various disabilities that can impact reading, including dyslexia, and provide tailored approaches to meet the unique needs of these learners. By the end of this 8-week course, teachers, online tutors and homeschool parents will be equipped to implement effective reading instruction and create inclusive learning environments that foster reading success.

    Course Objectives

    Course Duration: 8 weeks(16 sessions)
    By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
    1. Understand the foundations of reading development and the components of systematic and explicit reading instruction.
    2a. Identify and assess the specific reading needs and abilities of children with diverse learning profiles, including various disabilities such as:
    a. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
    b. Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
    c. Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) in reading
    d. Intellectual Disabilities (ID)
    e. Communication Disorders
    f. Developmental Delays
    g. Physical Disabilities impacting reading skills

    h. Dylexia
    2b. Identify common disabilities that can impact reading, such as dyslexia, and develop strategies to cater to the unique needs of students with these disabilities.
    3. Implement evidence-based instructional methods to teach phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.
    4. Select appropriate instructional materials and resources to support reading instruction.
    5. Plan and deliver systematic and explicit reading lessons that incorporate multi-sensory techniques and differentiated instruction.
    6. Assess and monitor students' reading progress using a variety of formal and informal assessment measures.
    7. Use assessment data to inform instructional decisions and differentiate instruction accordingly.
    8. Foster a positive reading culture and create a supportive and inclusive learning environment that promotes engagement and motivation.
